TIPS FOR A SAFE AND HAPPY RAYA BREAK

TIPS FOR A SAFE AND HAPPY RAYA BREAKTRUE to Malaysian culture, where everyone takes advantage of public holidays, this Hari Raya Aidilfitri will see an exodus of folks leaving the hustle and bustle of the big city to balik kampung or visit a local holiday destination.

Firstly, have a checklist of things to do or bring along before you begin your journey. This could include alerting the neighbours of your time away, bringing your phone/iPad/ gadget charger, and nice shoes to wear for Raya because your "driving" footwear is usually chosen on the basis of comfort rather than looks.

If there are children involved, in the small space of a vehicle and on long journeys, never underestimate the calming power of a bantal busuk (a favourite well-used pillow or soft toy that provides a feeling of comfort or protection that a child insists on carrying everywhere) if you want to avoid tears and tantrums.

Also, remember to "arm" your house against potential intruders by ensuring everything is locked up and by keeping a few lights on. It would also be wise to inform your neighbour as well as police about your absence so they can keep an eye on your house.

Don't forget to unplug unused electrical items (such as the television, air-conditioner, water heater and computer) and the cooking gas cylinder.
