Kuala Lumpur, 24th October 2020 - The number of COVID-19 cases in the country may be unrelenting but Malaysians living abroad say they prefer to be home due to the nation's aggressive containment measures.

Jess Koh Jia Chi, 24, who is pursuing medicine in Ireland, said she would have returned to Malaysia if her flight had not been cancelled at the eleventh hour.

"Malaysia acted swiftly to rein in the pandemic by implementing movement restrictions, barring international travel, and introducing the mandatory face mask rule.

"The media also played its part to raise awareness (of the virus)", she said.

Despite Malaysia facing a third wave of COVID-19, Koh said most Western countries pale in comparison to Malaysia's performance.

"The resurgence of the pandemic in Malaysia warrants concern, but the efforts taken to stem the COVID-19 transmission have been successful so far.

"Ireland's population is eight times smaller than Malaysia's. Yet the number of new cases logged here daily is similar to Malaysia.

"Malaysians are largely compliant, and the new norms, such as physical distancing, are adopted," she said.

Koh said this was in stark contrast to Ireland.

"Until today, we do not have a mandatory face mask rule because people here are of the opinion that forcing them to wear face masks violates their human rights," she said.
