SUSPECT REMANDED FOR GUN POSSESSION

Kangar, August 24 - The 32-year-old suspect detained following the discovery of a gun on him at an accident here yesterday, had a history for drug use.

Perlis police chief Dato' Azisman Alias said investigations was still ongoing to determine if the Desert Eagle, an Israeli-made semi-automatic gun, had been used in any crime cases in the past.

“We are also investigating the reason for the man to carrying the loaded piece,” he said when contacted today.

Police had obtained a seven-day remand order against the man to facilitate investigation under Section 8 of the Firearms Act (Increased Penalty) 1971 for unlawful possession of the gun and Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960 for illegal possession of five round bullets found in the its chamber.

Kangar Court Assistant Registrar Monica Joseph Gaisah issued the remand order beginning today until August 30.

It was reported that the gun was found by villagers who came to the man’s aid when the latter involved in an accident at Jalan Alor Redis here at 11am yesterday.

The gun was found next to the suspect who fell of the motorcycle after he lost control of the machine and crashed into a paddy field.

The villagers apprehended the suspect who was unable to run away due to the injuries on his leg sustained during the crash, before handing him over to the police. - NEW STRAITS TIMES ONLINE
