JOHOR POLICE SERIOUS ABOUT WIPING OUT ILLEGAL GAMBLING
Johor Bahru, Sept, 28 - The Johor police is serious about its fight against the illegal gambling menace,
Johor police chief Datuk Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd said the state police were in control of the situation, and it would carry on its enforcement against people found to be involved in illegal activity in the state.
"The Johor police fight on illegal gambling is not something we began today. It has been ongoing, and we are very serious about it.
"In the past, the number (of cases) was high, but we managed to reduce the number. We are in control.
"If anyone knows about people doing such things secretively, I urge them to inform the police," Khalil told the New Straits Times.
Johor police recently crippled 54 gambling premises and confiscated 1,010 gaming machines in a major operation from Sept 10 to 20 throughout the state.
The operation saw 282 people being detained and RM20,819 seized.
Khalil said the latest statistics of Johor police operations against illegal gambling activities for the third quarter of this year would be released on Oct 1.
Yesterday, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said that police were set to launch its biggest ever crackdown on illegal gambling nationwide.
Noor Rashid said to ensure total success, an "illegal gambling action committee" had been formed. The committee would plan, analyse, synergise and execute plans to wipe out illegal gambling.
The crackdown would start with raids on identified outlets, followed by action against online gambling platforms.
Meanwhile, Johor Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Azman Ayob said that police was putting a stop to illegal online gambling activities as well.
He said the statistics from the Op Dadu (Online Gambling) operations revealed that 261 people were charged in court for such activities between Jan 1 and Sept 26 this year in Johor.
During the same period, police seized 13,165 machines including computers, laptops and tablets in operations related to illegal online gambling activities.
