KERATAN AKHBAR PILIHAN : MISSING MY DAD

I sometimes envy my cousins and friends who still have their fathers around. There is a vacuum within me when Fathers Day comes around, as I don’t have my father, Harjit Singh Raipatti, to celebrate the day with.

I had the privilege of having had the most time with my Dad, being the eldest of three children. I can still recall my wonderful childhood spent with him. The family grew, with the arrival of my brother and sister within the next few years.

He used to take us out every weekend to the playground, shopping mall or cinema. We spent memorable quality time together.

Dad was fair-skinned, tall and well-built. He first served with the Federal Reserve Unit, and later, the Royal Malaysia Police.

Mum worked at a prestigious law firm. Her working hours were rigid and lengthy, often extending into overtime, so she had little time with the children. On weekdays, Mum was around from late evening till our bedtime, catching up on us and helping us with our homework. Dad, on the other hand, had flexible working hours, and so was able to devote more time to the children.

According to my mum, when each of us children were born, he would take his annual leave to take care of everything during my mum’s confinement days. He was a doting father.

As we grew up, he mostly handled our daily needs, like food intake, transport to and from school, and our general well-being. To Dad, the family always came first.

We lived in the police barracks, a humble and cosy dwelling. We had a motorbike and a car, and with both parents working, we had enough to lead decent lives. Our days were filled with joy and laughter; we were indeed truly blessed.
