Kota Bharu, 27th December 2020 - Police believe stores set up by smugglers along Sungai Golok near here are being used as transit points for the smuggling of frozen meat into the country.
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department Director, CP Dato’ Sri Abd Rahim Jaafar said besides being used as storage for smuggled frozen meat, the stores were also used to store other contraband.
From there, he said, the frozen meat would be sent to destinations in stages.
"This illegal activity is not something new. It has been taking place for many years. It has also become a local business.
"The smuggling of frozen meat is not only rampant in Kelantan but also in Sarawak.
In Kelantan, it is different as Malaysia is separated from Thailand by only Sungai Golok.
"We can see many stores set up along the border by smugglers. The stores act as transit points not only for frozen meat but also other contraband," he told the New Sunday Times.
