Kota Kinabalu, 17th January 2021 - Relief in the form of food and essential goods has been airlifted to Pitas flood victims. The villagers were not only cut off, but were also trapped for several days when roads and bridge leading to 13 villages in the district either collapsed or were damaged by the floods.

A police helicopter had been used to send essential supplies to several villages since Friday.

Sabah Community Development and People's Wellbeing Minister, Tuan Haji Shahelmey Yahya visited Kampung Gumpa Liu yesterday, one of the affected villages, to monitor the distribution of food.

He said, the ministry would arrange for more food items to be channelled to the affected villagers as soon as possible.

Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said the state government had taken note of the flood disaster, which hit six districts in the state. Apart from Pitas, Kota Marudu, Beaufort, Lahad Datu, Paitan and Kudat were inundated.

Many villages in the districts were submerged, prompting the evacuation of more than 1,000 people to relief centres since last week.

"The government, through the Public Welfare Services Department and the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), provided cooked meals to evacuees and distributed food baskets worth RM200 to each of the affected households," said Hajiji.
