Kuala Lumpur, 9 November 2021 - Gullibility, greed and a lack of awareness are among the factors that have given online and phone scammers the upper hand in deceiving their victims, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), IG Dato' Sri Acryl Sani Hj. Abdullah Sani said.
This has caused a steep rise in such cases over the past decade.
Despite efforts taken by police to clamp down on the menace through enforcement and promote awareness to the public, the numbers continue to rise.
Last year, 17,109 cases were reported with a combined loss of RM510 million, while 17,537 cases, including various scams, were reported this year between January and last month, with a total loss of almost RM450 million.
"While technology for online transactions has improved and has facilitated society, it has also opened doors to unscrupulous individuals who have taken advantage of it to commit crimes, like online scamming," he said during the launch of the Commercial Crime Campaign (online crimes) 2021 at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel here yesterday.
